Does anyone find it weird that Professors grade students according to how well you do as compared to other students? It is interesting in the least...but I'm not yet sure if it will help or hurt me!
My syllabus for astro reads: "Final grades will be assigned on a curve at the end of the semester, however I will let you know how you did compared to your classmates after each homework and exam. All that matters is how well you do compared to your classmates."
Strangeeee....
PS: First Astro 101 test tomorrow.....wish me luck!

My chem lab is like that. I think it is good because it allows grades to be adjusted based on students' performance. It makes lab grades more fair because lab is run by TAs who all grade differently. If one lab section has a class average of A and the other has an average of C then the curve allows the grades to be evened out.
ReplyDeleteI went to office hours and three different TAs came in to help. I asked them all the same question and they each gave me a different answer. The curve makes up for this type of discrepancy.
I certainly think it's weird and definitely frustrating. In fact, I don't know whether it's a good approach (because if the test is hard and everyone finds the test hard, then not doing so well is acceptable) or a bad approach (because one never knows what they have in the class). My chemistry and chemistry lab is graded like that. The average for my first chemistry exam was a 50 but the curve happens at the end of the semester, so the frustrating part is I won't know what I'm making in the class til then.
ReplyDeleteI hope you did amaaaazing on your test:)
ReplyDeleteI'll just to wait and see how and did, and how this type of curve will work out for me. Hopefully it will work out well, if not I will probably be a little pissed!
ReplyDeleteThis system that compares your grade with others sounds like it really sucks...because if your not the smartest person, you're screwed...Haha. Though, a curve might help in the long run because all it could do is help. Did you find out how the test went?
